What Were You Wearing?
What Were You Wearing?, Installation, Clothing rack, clothes worn during assault, video (2023)
This installation is an adaptation and continuation of the What Were You Wearing exhibition. This project is an art exhibit based on student-survivor descriptions of the clothes they were wearing during their sexual assault. For my installation, I have included a variety of my clothes pertaining to this ongoing movement. As for the intent of this piece, I hope the audience will gain a better understanding of how sexual assaults do not coincide with the clothes worn during an assault. Survivors of sexual assault are often first questioned about the clothes they were wearing and subsequently blamed for the assault. As you navigate through this installation, the audience is invited to look through and interact with the pieces of clothing. In Someday You’ll Be Gone, I invite the audience to listen and watch this video as it reflects and correlates with the clothing. After interacting with this installation, I hope the audience will become more aware that clothing does not correlate with being assaulted along with bringing light towards the stigma and weight survivors carry with them.
